Conscious Fashion in NYC | Miakoda

written by Shae August 12, 2018
Conscious Fashion in NYC | Miakoda

A couple of months ago I came across Miakoda, a brand based in New York that stood out to me for it’s sustainable and ethically made clothing. All of their pieces are made from sustainable fabrics and they embrace a less waste model by making accessories out of scrap fabric from their collections.

My curves and I have struggled to find sustainable clothes that are form fitting and comfortable. Also, so many ethical and sustainable brands are expensive. It is hard to justify spending $200+ at a place you’ve never purchased before because you don’t know the true quality and longevity of the pieces you’re buying yet. Miakoda is worth it.

I received three pieces from Miakoda and this post has taken me two months to write because I really wanted to live in them for a 100% honest review and provide real ways you can incorporate their pieces into your day to day wear.

The Organic Body Suit

Size M | Color White | Made from Bamboo, Organic Cotton and Spandex.

(I am 5’5”, 130lbs, 34B)

The review – 9/10

This bodysuit fits me perfectly and I have a longer than normal torso I would say. There are buttons on the crotch for easy restroom access. The fabric is so breathable, but I wish it were just a little thicker so I can wear it with a sticky bra. Instead, I wear a beige bra underneath and it does the job coverage wise. It is also travel friendly, I took this piece to Costa Rica and wore it with my Matter Print pants (blog post here), shorts and skirts.

How to style

I like to get at least three ways to style out of one piece.

  1. Casual with high waisted jeans and boots/sneakers
  2. Dressed up with low rise jeans and a cardigan and booties/heels
  3. During the day with a skirt and sneakers/sandals

Shop the body suit here.

The Organic Robe

Size S/M | Color Olive | Made from Soy, Organic Cotton and Spandex

The review – 10/10

A perfect rating is rare. I have to admit I was a little hesitant when I first put on the robe because it just barely covers my bottom, but at home it is super sexy! I don’t mind (#sustainableissexy). This piece is the most versatile piece of clothing I have ever owned. I can wear it as a shirt, cardigan, robe. The fabric is soft. The design is minimal, clean and can look professional.

I have been able to get more than three style out of this piece:

  1. Wrap top for work/professional attire
  2. Casual as a cardigan
  3. Dressed up as a cardigan
  4. Beach cover up
  5. Sweater on airplanes
  6. At home as a robe

Shop the robe here.

The Sustainable Slouchy Romper – 10/10

Size Small | Color Black | Made from Modal and Ribbed Spandex

The review

I love a good romper/jumpsuit! This one in particular is the most comfortable piece I’ve owned. I’ve fallen asleep in it. I don’t like my legs covered while I’m sleeping, so that says something on it’s own. The low back is sexy and I love wearing a sticky bra with it. I was nervous about the low crotch on these, but the way the fabric drapes, adds uniqueness and style to a piece like this.

How to style

[su_carousel source=”media: 2192,2190,2189″ link=”custom” target=”blank” width=”800″ height=”400″ title=”no”]

  1. Just the romper
  2. Casual with a tied t-shirt over it
  3. Dressed up with heels and Miakoda robe or other cardigan over it

Shop the slouchy romper here.
