I’m starting to plan our vacations this summer, and they may or may not include Costa Rica and a spontaneous trip to Europe for Josh’s graduation! Being a conscious consumer, I’m beginning to discover that planning an eco friendly vacation isn’t a new concept. It’s actually called sustainable tourism or ecotourism and has been an initiative of the UK’s for over a year now! The three pillars of sustainable tourism are employing environmentally friendly practices (reduce, reuse, recycle); protecting cultural and natural heritage (restoring historic buildings or saving endangered species); and providing tangible social and economic benefits for local communities (ranging from upholding the rights of indigenous peoples to supporting fair wages for employees).
Most of us do our due diligence to offset our travel footprints by turning off the lights when leaving our rooms, participating in hotel programs to reuse linens and towels and recycling on-site. We can actually do much more to lighten our footprint in the planning process of our trips. I’m doing 8 simple things to make our travel plans more eco-friendly this summer, come join me!
While planning:
1. Plan a conscious itinerary
Look into hotels and travel agencies that employ local staff. It supports the local economy and people that live in the area you’re visiting. There are such thing as green hotels, I’ve also had great experiences at hostels and Airbnb’s. When it comes to planning activities, local tour guides always know the best kept secrets to your vacation spot.
2. Look into local and transportation
If you can, avoid planes. I’m looking into trains and buses and ferry rides specifically in Europe. Planes produce a ton of carbon emissions , so if you can, take the train, walk or rideshare! WARNING: Do look into the reliability of public transportation in some areas, as well as safety.
3. Protect natural and cultural heritage
This one is easy, simply research the area you’re going and be aware of endangered animals and plants in the area. It also pays to know the culture and respect and historic sites that you may be visiting.
While packing:
4. Pack light
The lighter you pack, the lighter your footprint. I recently got a sustainable carry-on bag from Samsonite that I love. The entire bag is made from recycled water bottles and if you follow me on Instagram, you will see that I’m very excited about and eco friendly suitcase option. In packing, I am as minimalist as possible and pack a capsule wardrobe. I can get 10 outfits out of 10 pieces which is perfect for a 7-10 day long trip.
5. Minimize the use of plastic
Plastic is just all around bad. First time hearing this? Google “why plastic is bad.” I only just recently started cutting plastic out of our lives! The first and easiest substitutions we made for plastic were: purchasing portable utensils, purchasing portable straws and reusable cotton produce and tote bags. The utensils and straws are light enough to take with us on the go and perfect to carry in our luggage. WARNING: if you’re carrying on a bag, don’t bring the knife it will get confiscated by TSA, my personal experience 😉
6. BYOB
Bring your own bottle. Being a reusable water bottle and fill it as much as you can provided that the water is safe.
On Vacation:
7. Consume and buy local products
This goes into supporting the community and local economy, but also I feel you get more of an authentic experience by consuming local products.
8. Take it slow
It’s called vacation for a reason! I have such a go-go-go personality, but taking it slow, consuming less in the long run, it’s all sustainable.
