It’s been a long time since I’ve shared my favorite every day, low-waste and eco-friendly products. Sometimes living “less waste” or more sustainably can feel like too much work or overwhelming, but these are products and swaps that I’ve found that are easier if not less time consuming and more eco-friendly than their not-so-sustainable counterparts.
Eco Friendly Swaps for the Kitchen:
- Silicone storage bags – these are great for everything! They’re dishwasher safe, if you don’t purchase the ones that I linked, make sure that you look for bags made with food grade silicone.
- Reusable paper towels + Polly cleaning rags – also known as Swedish dishcloths. These are a great alternative to single use paper towels and pair nicely with the non-toxic surface cleaner below. I also started using Polly cleaning cloths at the start of the pandemic since the micro fibers are so small that they are able to pick up 99.99% of bacteria.
- EC30 surface cleaner swatches + reusable bottle – These cleaning swatches are magical. They come in all compostable packaging. Just place two swatches in a spray bottle with water and it makes a preservative free all-purpose cleaner. This surface cleaner also works on glass and doesn’t leave any streaks! I’ve swapped Clorox wipes with this solution because of its all-purpose nature. I’ve also found that the cleaner isn’t as abrasive than other cleaners if used without gloves. The spray bottle is a great minimal small spray bottle that perfectly pairs with these swatches. And because the cleaner is preservative-free, it lasts about a week.
- Water bottles (bottles linked in image above) – I use these more on-the-go, but these are my favorites. The ceramic mug from Soma is more modern than your average thermos. The Que bottle is also a favorite of mine when we’re traveling because it can be expanded and shrunk, when you need more room in your bag. Finally, for someone who only likes cold water, I love how minimalistic the insulated hot and cold water bottle is.
- Reusable straws + keychain straw – I love having these reusable straws in our home, but more conveniently I really like my portable keychain straw. It’s come in really handy for me when I’m on the go.
- Beeswax wraps – these have replaced plastic wrap in my home. At first, I wasn’t a fan of them, but these are so much easier than trying to straighten out traditional plastic wrap and is better for the environment since plastic wrap can’t be recycled.
- Reusable bags + produce bags – I recommend purchasing these in 100% cotton so you can properly wash and dry them. Many of the free or reusable bags that grocery stores sell can’t be properly washed, so those bags end up harboring a lot of bacteria.
Eco Friendly Swaps for the Bathroom:
- Reusable cloth rounds – these are the best swap for cotton rounds. I use these for virtually anything that I would use a cotton ball or cotton round for–even removing nail polish as long as it’s rinsed afterwards. To clean, I throw them in the laundry in a small laundry bag.
- Zero waste beauty products – the EC30 personal care products, including shampoo, conditioner, body wash and face wash, are perfect for traveling because they are light-weight, and don’t contain water. The products are activated by adding water.
- Silicone loofah – This is the best replacement I’ve been able to find for a traditional loofa, but it lasts so much longer! I’ve had mine for over a year and it’s still in the same shape as when I purchased it. It also doesn’t get moldy so there’s no need to replace it every 3 months like a traditional loofah.
- Old candle jars for containers – this is more of a hack than an eco-friendly product. Instead of trashing old candle jars they make perfect jars for cotton rounds, cotton swabs or other small bathroom tools.
- Non-toxic toilet bowl cleaner – EC30’s non-toxic toilet bowl cleaner is a game changer–not just because it’s non-toxic, but also very effective. It’s also very space efficient if you’re short on storage in your home.
- Reusable cloth rounds – I used to go through so many cotton rounds and cotton balls for makeup removal, removing nail polish and so much more. These are perfect because I throw them in the washing machine when I wash my towels and they come out good as new (although they don’t stay pretty).
That sums up my favorite eco-friendly products lately, if you give them a try, let me know what you think!
Thanks to EC30 for sponsoring this post – and even though they sponsored – I’ve used all these products and love them! Plus, EC30 is on their journey to carbon neutral! They’ve been able to achieve Carbon Neutral through confirming that they reduce C02 emission by 50% vs traditional liquids, and partner with the Arbor day foundation to offset what they can’t reduce today by investing in nature.
