Have you ever been nervous before your first job review? Well going to my first performance review today had me sweating, and although I have some things to work on, I thought I’d share some tips every twenty-something year old should know when starting a new job.
IT ALL STARTS FROM DAY 1
A CEO from one of my past college internships once told me, always volunteer for things that no one else wants to do. He attributed his successes to that very idea. His little piece of advice really hit home and on my first day at my job, I pushed my self to step out of my comfort zone to volunteer at an event they were having that week. I didn’t find out until my first evaluation, but it was noticed and my supervisor expressed that it was her favorite part about me, jumping in, like I was part of the team.
THINK POSITIVE ALWAYS
Depending on your job, I happen to work in marketing, being positive is key to pooling in resources and working with others. If you’re managing projects and so many aspects be positive and the work that you do will end up turning out well. Kind of like a self-fulfilling prophecy.
JUMP IN
Related to “it all starts from Day 1” don’t be intimidated or afraid of a new or challenging project. Take initiative and just do it. Always plan and work ahead.
PLAY ON YOUR STRENGTHS
When you find that you’re stronger in certain areas, use those strengths to accomplish your projects. For example, when I have a big project I immediately start by
- Writing down all of the tasks at hand or the plan
- Learning the background of the project and seeing what had been done before
- Making sure everyone that could be involved knows the plan and what I will need them to be responsible to do
What are your go to ways to tackle a project? Would love to hear in the comments.
xx always,
