Switching to a bar shampoo was the most simple, uncompromising sustainable swap I’ve ever made. Thinking about making the switch too? Then definitely read on for tips when using bar shampoo and my review of the new Spring and Vine shampoo bars.
I love that sustainability and clean beauty are so accessible these days. I was super excited to learn that Target started carrying Spring and Vine shampoo bars, I had to give them a try. Spring and Vine is a new clean and cruelty-free beauty brand, only carried at Target currently. Their bars are all vegan, made with less water than traditional shampoo, are only fragranced by essential oils and have the same amount of washes as your traditional shampoo bottle. Sounds amazing!
Before I try a product though, I ALWAYS look at the ingredients. It’s so easy for companies to slap a “natural” label on their products. There aren’t really any regulations on beauty product labeling unless it’s a certification, so I normally dive into the ingredients on the packaging like I do with my food labels.
Here’s what’s in the Rosemary Grapefruit bar, along with a description because a lot of these ingredients have long names for basic things:
- Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate – a salt derived from coconut oil
- Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil – hydrogenated just means, added with hydrogen to create a solid/spreadable version of the oil
- Polyglyceryl-4 Laurate – plant-based soap/cleaner which is very safe
- Water – basically life.
- Glycerin – moisturizer and soap
- Fragrance – in their case, essential oils
- Shea Butter Ethyl Esters – basically shea butter in a softer lighter form
- Titanium Dioxide – a natural ingredient usually used in cosmetics for a white color, there are some studies that say it can be harmful if you inhale it. But it’s safe for use topically and isn’t absorbed through skin. Really inhaling anything that isn’t oxygen isn’t “clean,” but I won’t get into that 😉
- Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil – argan oil
- Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil – jojoba oil
- Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate – plant based preservative booster
- Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Powder – rosemary
- Citric Acid – preservative from fruits like lemons
The review:
I love the packaging! The water color is a beautiful touch and I love how the box isn’t coated with plastic, which makes them non recyclable. I was a little disappointed that the bar of shampoo was actually wrapped in plastic, but they are working on a new solution to keep the bars fresher for longer without the plastic.
At first use, the bar produces a really nice lather, almost creamy, which makes it really easy to work into my thick, coarse, really long hair (it’s down to my belly button these days). The smell of these bars is amazing, but I expected it since I love the smell of essential oils and prefer using essential oils as a perfume alternative. These bars also clean hair very well. I can get to day three hair with no issues and the bar cleans my day three hair, so I can go another three days.
Some tips for using bar shampoo for the first time:
- Do lather the bar in your hands for 20 seconds and then work it through your hair instead of rubbing the bar directly onto your hair.
- If you rub the bar directly onto your hair, make sure you wash all of the soap out of your hair. If you don’t, the product can build up, which can make your hair feel oily.
- If you experience bar shampoo build up, rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar.
- Don’t store it in a dish without drainage or a travel tin – many zero-waste stores will sell you on a nice storage tin for your bar, but keeping it in one, will actually make your bar fall apart within a couple of days.
- If you’re actually traveling, I place my shampoo bar in a cotton drawstring bag to absorb the moisture and then store it in my tin. When you’re back from your trip, just throw the cotton bag in the laundry!

The Spring and Vine shampoo Bar sounds lovely, minus the plastic packaging that the bar actually came in. I also loved that you explained what all of the ingredients are since it can be hard to know what is safe and what isn’t. Also, thanks for the expert tips on how to use the bar itself. Very much appreciated.

I bought the oatmeal shampoo bar. Can’t wait to try the other scents. 🙂 Thanks for the review and tips!
I would love to try this! It would be amazing for traveling internationally. Thanks for sharing. Xo, Ellese
I have also tried several bar shampoos and conditioners and have been using Ethique for over a year. Target carried Ethique for a while but now I can only get online. I just bought a bar of Spring & Vine and am very hopeful. Any idea if they are planning to produce a conditioner bar?
I’ve heard of Ethique, but have not tried their bars myself. I have not had any luck with conditioner bars, which is disappointing. I’ve tried Lush’s but I can’t get any product out of them with out working at it for a while. I also have so much hair–I’m still looking for an alternative!
