It didn’t occur to me to limit VOCs until I became pregnant. For the past 8 months, I’ve given up cleaning with chemicals and as much as I wish, I haven’t had time to play around with making natural cleaners. This is why I was excited when I discovered EC30’s zero-waste and eco-friendly cleaning products. EC30 makes cleaning products (hand wash, surface cleaner, laundry detergent and toilet bowl cleaner) and personal care products (face wash, body wash, shampoo and conditioner) in what looks like a dissolvable cotton swatch. Their products are the most sustainable that I’ve come across, and after learning that the EC30 cleaning products are safe to use during pregnancy, I had to give the brand a try.
I received a “Try It All Kit” from EC-30, and here is my honest review:

Sustainability Review
I’ve learned that there is more to sustainability in a product than just being plastic free. Where the materials come from, how products are made and ingredients are all factors that go into how sustainable a product is before packaging. In my opinion EC30’s products are remarkable because there is no water involved until I use it at home.
No water means:
● No need for plastic bottles
● Products are lighter and more compact for shipping (which is better for the environment and space saving at home
● Less ingredients – no preservatives need be added to keep liquid products fresh and no stabilizers, emulsifiers and fillers need to be added to keep liquid products as a stable liquid
● Eco-friendly packaging – the boxes are recyclable and compostable and the shipping bag is also compostable!
EC30’s cleaners and personal care products are the most sustainable that I’ve come across and therefore received a 10/10 in sustainability in my eyes.
Product/Performance Review
Home Care Products:
- Laundry detergent – the fragrance is subtle, which I enjoyed. It also works well! PJ had an accident on our white duvet cover which left a stain and smell. One run with the EC30’s eco-friendly laundry detergent and the stains were gone.
- Toilet cleaner – I haven’t cleaned a toilet bowl in months and it felt good to finally be able to do that and give EC30 toilet cleaner a try. The EC30 toilet cleaner doesn’t contain bleach or give off any harmful fumes. I was worried though that without these chemicals it wouldn’t work as well, but instantly after you drop a packet of detergent into the bowl, it foams a lot and cleans the bowl better than the traditional toilet cleaner.
- Surface cleaner – For this, you drop one swatch into a spray bottle and fill with water. I would recommend using two swatches per bottle for a more powerful cleaner. I also recommend that for this product, to make sure the swatch has dissolved entirely before using it. The surface cleaner has no preservatives and is good for one week. If you haven’t used it all in a week – you can use what’s left to clean your sink or tub.
- Hand wash – This was the first product I tried. The swatch lathered up the instant water touched my hand. An entire swatch might be too much hand wash for one time use, I would prefer to use half of a swatch and it could also make them go further.
Personal Care Products:
- Shampoo – I enjoyed it, and the amount was perfect. Although I have a lot of hair. This would be the perfect solution for traveling with space limitations and a weight limit.
- Conditioner – I was very impressed, it turned into a conditioner in the palm of my hand almost instantly. I’ve had trouble with hair conditioning bars as they’re too time consuming and frustrating to use. I wish these swatches were larger though since I typically use double the amount of conditioner than shampoo.
- Body wash – this one foams a lot on its own, although, it isn’t sulfate free, so it might not be a good product for people sensitive to that ingredient. These swatches could be smaller, I use ½ a swatch per shower. I think this would be a good solution to bubble bath, although I haven’t tried it yet.
- Face wash – it even removes facial make up! My face felt extremely clean after using this. I would also split the swatches like the hand wash and body wash to make them go further.
Price Comparison:
Sustainable products normally come at a higher price point, but I wanted to compare the pricing of some of the EC30 products I might want to subscribe to.
Toilet bowl cleaner – The toxic version we have at home costs about $4 for two bottles and I can usually clean up to 20 toilets with the two bottles which is about $.20 per cleaning. For 15 swatches of toilet bowl cleaner with EC30, each clean is about $1.93.
For me, the toilet bowl cleaner is worth it because it’s so compact, it smells amazing and it does a better job cleaning than the toxic version with bleach. It also helps that there aren’t any VOCs, so I know it will be safe around my dog who gets sick from the fumes of liquid toilet bowl cleaner when we’ve used it.
Laundry detergent – $5 for 25 loads= $.20 per load | EC30 is about $.96
There are already some zero waste options on the market at a lower price point–EC30 is more space saving though, which is great to take when you are traveling or if you don’t have space to store detergent in your home
Shampoo – $15 per shampoo bar | $29 for 30 swatches of EC30
Hair care pricing varies across the board, so this one is a bit more difficult to compare to. I would recommend the try it all kit to determine if you like it.
Conditioner – $20 per bottle | $29 for 30 swatches of EC30
Again, the price of conditioner can vastly vary, but I was actually so impressed by their conditioner, but for the amount of hair that I have I would have to use at least 1.5 swatches per shower. Conditioner bars have never worked for me, so I would recommend an EC30 conditioner if you’re traveling due to weight and liquid limits.
EC30 does offer discounts when you subscribe for recurring deliveries of their products with a higher discount when you order more products – so that’s another way to save on these great products!
EC30 gave me a code if you’re interested in getting the Try it all Kit to test for yourself. Getting this kit definitely helped me figure out which products I’ll be subscribing to long term. Use code ShaeNecessities10 to save an extra $10 on a Try it All Kit making the whole kit just $25 at EC30clean.com!
